Commodore Heath Robertson AM CSC RAN

Commodore Heath Robertson AM CSC RAN was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division on The King’s Birthday 2026.

Commodore Robertson was recognised for exceptional service to the Royal Australian Navy in training, strategic engagement and senior leadership roles.

He has worked across roles such as Captain Sea Training and Director Maritime Warfare Training, Director Navy International Engagement and Chief of Defence Force Liaison Officer to Commander US Indo-Pacific Command and as Commander Support Force.

He explains success depends on forging positive relationships with shipmates:

“The Navy is a people-centric organisation. Its complex web of advanced technical machinery, infrastructure and operations remains as dependent on people working with and for each other as it did in the days of sail. To fight and win, shipmates must be bound by mateship.”

When asked about the values, people and experiences that have inspired him, Commodore Robertson’s response was twofold. He first acknowledged the enduring support of his wife and wonderful family, before sharing a reflection he has come to value:

“No matter how big your Command or portfolio was, forging tight, honest and respectful relationships with those who worked most closely with you, no matter respective ranks or roles, always paid off.”

On the topic of encouraging others to nominate someone for an Australian honour, he says:

“Honours and awards are important in that they afford praise and gratitude in a way that sticks – not only to the recipient, but to their workplace, organisation (and its purpose) and their family. At the same time, I would caution that most important is enjoying every day through close small team collaboration and e sprit de corps."

Finally, Commodore Robertson reflected eloquently on the unique moments of connection and the sense of belonging he has built within his community:

“Notwithstanding its primary purpose to defend the country, much of my Naval service has been laced with wonderful community links, from rescuing foundering yachtsmen to assisting with implementation of pandemic measures.

"...My most enduring communities' memories are at the opposite ends of the Navy community spectrum.

"Firstly, there were the wonderful occasions of graduations for our new entry officers and sailors, and the look of pride by proud family and friends in attendance – many without any previous connection to Defence.

"Secondly, there was always the honour and privilege to stand alongside returned serviceman on occasion.”

Commodore Robertson’s ability to influence strategic relationships and reshape Support Force to enhance Fleet operations will have positive impacts on the Royal Australian Navy for decades to come.
