Steven Adams OAM
Mr Steven Adams has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in The King’s Birthday 2026 Honours List for service to the Indigenous community through a range of roles.
For Steven, community service has been a lifelong commitment: “I have served my communities on boards and committees continuously since I was 17.”
Beginning as Junior Boat Captain at Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club and later progressing to Club Captain, Steven’s service expanded over the decades to include leadership roles across Aboriginal affairs, education, health, housing, employment, defence industry initiatives and community development.
His extensive contribution includes serving as President of the Itji-Marru Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, Board Member of the Aboriginal Housing Office, Director of Mara Ba Kumba, and membership on the First Nations Advisory Panel for the Greater Cities Commission. He has also contributed to primary healthcare governance, Indigenous business development, youth programs and defence workforce initiatives.
Steven says his work has always been guided by something simple: “I have a belief that in the scheme of things we are on this earth for a very short time. It is our responsibility to contribute to build a stronger and healthier future for our next generation.”
Steven’s commitment to future generations is reflected in the outcomes he values most: “Smiling, healthy, confident kids and young adults. Their strength is our future.”
Steven is continually inspired by his family, his mob and the communities he serves. He believes meaningful progress comes from working directly alongside community members and ensuring their voices remain at the centre of decision-making.
“By partnering directly with Elders and community members, we ensure our people see their own stories, language, and identity, fostering a lasting sense of collective ownership, pride, and true self-determination.”
Reflecting on his recognition, Steven describes receiving the honour as both humbling and deeply meaningful.
“This is an incredibly humbling honour that my work and commitment have been recognised by my peers and colleagues.”
He hopes the recognition will encourage others to acknowledge the people making a difference in their own communities.
“I'd encourage people to look around their community for those that are committed to positive outcomes and engagement.”
Steven’s decades of leadership, advocacy and community service have helped strengthen opportunities and connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across New South Wales and beyond. His dedication to empowering communities and supporting future generations continues to leave a lasting impact.
