Dale Malcolm Wright OAM
For more than 30 years, Mr Dale Malcolm Wright has helped men from all walks of life find connection, purpose and support through a programme he founded in Shepparton.
Now, his decades of service to the community have been recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in The King's Birthday 2026 honours list.
Mr Wright received the honour for service to the community through a range of organisations, including his long-running men's programme Talking Straight, his work with St Brendan's Parish, and his broader community involvement.
Mr Wright said he had been recognised for creating "eclectic and holistic men's mental fitness groups" over the past three decades.
The Talking Straight programme has supported more than 250 men since it began, offering a free 13-week course that encourages participants to reflect on all aspects of their lives.
"The cost of their commitment is their 'word' — in other words, it is free," Mr Wright says.
Participants range in age from 18 upwards and come from diverse backgrounds. A three-day Warrior training weekend on the Goulburn River near Nagambie forms part of the programme and is often a turning point for many men.
"The programme is based on respect, trust, friendships, reaching out, honouring the individual, understanding each other, finding oneself, being challenged, and nurturing," he explains.
"It is a confidential space, and participants must accept and respect each other. Many men find it difficult to trust other men in this busy world, and it is important to break down those barriers."
Mr Wright said many of the men who join the programme are navigating significant life challenges, including divorce, separation, depression, anxiety, or a search for belonging and direction.
"They gain tools they can carry with them — even years later. In many cases, this strengthens their relationships with family, partners, children, and, most importantly, their community," he says.
Most referrals come through word of mouth, often from former participants or friends and family who have seen positive changes in the men who have completed the programme.
Beyond Talking Straight, Mr Wright has dedicated more than 40 years to St Brendan's Parish in Shepparton, where he continues to serve as an organist, coordinates the Music Ministry and organises Stations of the Cross events.
He has also worked as a professional photographer through Dale Wright Portrait Maker since 1975 and has supported numerous community organisations, including through fundraising work with the Shepparton Kiwanis Club.
His previous honours include Greater Shepparton Citizen of the Year, the Police Blue Ribbon Foundation Community Support Award and the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award.
Reflecting on the recognition, Mr Wright encouraged community members to acknowledge the efforts of local volunteers.
"I encourage those who have observed the significant contributions of volunteers in their community to nominate them for future awards."
