Silvia Brown OAM
Mrs Silvia Brown OAM has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours for service to nursing.
For 38 years, Silvia has dedicated her career to caring for patients and supporting families across a range of healthcare settings. Through her work as a nurse, community nurse and, more recently, a Chronic Disease Nurse Navigator at Ingham Health Service, she has helped people navigate some of the most challenging periods of their lives.
Over the past six years, Silvia has worked closely with patients and families facing complex health conditions, supporting them to access services, understand their treatment options and navigate often complicated healthcare systems. She works collaboratively with specialist teams across palliative care, oncology, haematology and other multidisciplinary services to ensure continuity of care for patients regardless of where they live.
Throughout her career, Silvia has been guided by a commitment to providing not only excellent clinical care but also compassion, understanding and advocacy.
Reflecting on the importance of her work, Silvia said healthcare is ultimately about people.
“While treatment and clinical expertise are essential, what often makes the greatest difference is ensuring that patients and families feel supported, informed and connected,” she says.
Silvia believes helping people understand their condition, treatment options and available supports enables them to make informed decisions and feel more confident throughout their healthcare journey.
“Having someone to guide them, listen to their concerns, help problem solve and advocate on their behalf can make a significant difference to their experience and wellbeing,” she explains.
Throughout her nursing career, Silvia said she has been inspired by the many patients, families, colleagues and mentors she has encountered along the way. “They have taught me the importance of kindness, resilience, humility and compassion,” she acknowledges. “I have learned that every person has a story, and that taking the time to listen is one of the most important things we can do.”
Silvia also acknowledges the unwavering support of her family, whose encouragement and understanding have sustained her throughout the demands of a long career in healthcare.
“This recognition is not mine alone,” she notes.
“It reflects the love, support and sacrifices of those who have stood by me, encouraged, supported and taught me throughout my nursing journey.”
Silvia encourages Australians to nominate individuals who make a positive difference in their communities, noting that honours provide an opportunity to recognise those who quietly and consistently dedicate themselves to helping others.
She thanked her patients, families, colleagues, mentors and loved ones, whose support, trust and encouragement have shaped her career and reinforced her commitment to compassionate care.
