Gavin Parker AFSM

Mr Gavin Parker has served in a wide range of frontline and leadership roles across Victoria for nearly five decades. He receives an Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for his significant contributions to the safety and wellbeing of Victorian communities.

"This recognition is not about me alone. It reflects a journey shaped by many remarkable people who believed in me, opened doors, offered encouragement, and shared their time, knowledge, and support. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by individuals who inspired me, challenged my thinking, and encouraged me to pursue opportunities when they presented themselves."

Gavin grew up in a small country town that remains home to his family, with his father previously serving as the captain of the local volunteer fire brigade. He explains that it was through his father's example of service, commitment, and community, that he was inspired to follow in his footsteps.

Gavin commenced service with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) as a volunteer at the Neerim South Fire Brigade in 1976, where he held numerous leadership positions. In 1995, he transitioned to a career firefighter role with the CFA and, following the transition of career firefighters to Fire Rescue Victoria in 2020, has continued to serve the CFA on secondment from Fire Rescue Victoria.

Gavin speaks about the exceptional people he has been privileged to work alongside within "CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria, and partner agencies," across his operational roles as "Firefighter, Leading Firefighter, Station Officer, Senior Station Officer, and during [his] higher duties as a Commander." He explains that none of this occurred in isolation; "it was made possible by leaders who trusted, encouraged learning, backed me, and provided opportunities to grow."

Throughout his career, Gavin has played a key role locally, interstate and internationally in responses to major incidents such as Ash Wednesday, the Eastern Victorian Alpine fires of 2003, Black Saturday, the 2017 California wildfires, Black Summer 2019–20, on top of many other significant fires, floods, and storm events.

Gavin touches on his involvement in the thermal imaging space, having introduced the technology to the CFA. He now advises in equipment selection and training development - among other things - as the organisation's subject matter expert. Overall, Gavin’s focus is on "preparedness and response to fires and incidents."

Gavin has also developed interest in wildfire township protection planning and peat fires, noting that the transition has allowed him to "focus on methods for identifying peat fuels, evaluating burning potential, and improving environmental outcomes during peat fire operations."

"This recognition reflects a shared journey shaped by many people who believed in me, encouraged curiosity, shared their knowledge, and opened doors along the way."

Gavin has made a significant contribution to the safety and wellbeing of Victorian communities throughout his distinguished career through his commitment to innovation, and dedication to frontline personnel. He has served the CFA and the wider community with distinction and enduring impact.
