Renton Millar OAM
Mr Renton Millar has spent his entire life working within skateboarding, receiving an OAM on Australia Day 2026 for his extensive service.
For Renton, skateboarding is "a job, a hobby, and a lifestyle… it's everything."
His involvement within the sport is vast, spanning his "time as a pro, running events, coaching, helping with administration, judging, and even teaching judging."
Following his professional career commencing 1987, Renton was notably a judge at both the 2024 Paris Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as being a S2020 Committee Member on the 2018 Australian Olympic Skateboarding Team.
Motivation has never been difficult for Renton:
"I truly enjoy being immersed in skateboarding, and there are so many opportunities to leverage that teach others the skills that have made my life so satisfying. I love the work I do and seeing how much happiness it brings to others makes it even better. Everybody wins!"
Upon receiving his award, Renton says, “Skateboarding hasn't traditionally received this type of recognition, so this is new for both me and the community.”
While skateboarding was a relatively new sport when Renton started, he describes its maturity now and the increased numbers of skateparks built across the country as testament to Australia "accepting the culture' and as a "credit to this country.”
As well as its fitness and mental health benefits, he reflects how the sport has supported the creation of multiple industries from retail and fashion to the design and construction of parks, and development of national squads, describing it as "a thriving ecosystem of physical, mental, and social activity in public spaces."
Renton is grateful for the OAM in providing a level of validation that will help with the work he does and hopes that the recognition inspires his children.
Congratulations, Renton!
