Nunziata Basile OAM
For 40 years, Nunziata has been dedicated to supporting seniors in her community, creating connection, culture, and belonging.
“When I first heard about the award, I thought back to my early days in Australia, arriving as a young migrant with little more than hope and determination. I never imagined that one day the work I do for my community would be recognised in this way.”
For Nunziata, an Order of Australia is about more than the medal:
“Everything I’ve done has come from a place of love and responsibility. I remember organizing our first community luncheon, just a handful of us in a borrowed church hall, sharing food and stories from our upbringing... “I want my children, grandchildren and great‑grandchildren to know that giving back truly matters — even small acts of kindness can ripple outwards.”
This recognition shines a light on the importance of supporting seniors, combating isolation, and celebrating the stories that bind communities together.
“This award helps highlight the importance of supporting them and keeping our culture alive. I hope it encourages more people to join us, volunteer, or simply reach out to someone who might need a friend.”
